The LIgHT-HEALS Summer Internship Program – Where Becoming Begins

This week, HBond Foundation welcomed 20 outstanding interns from Texas, New Jersey, Missouri, and Canada into the LIgHT-HEALS Integrated Summer Internship Program 2026. Over the next four weeks in San Antonio, these students will do something that many internships never ask of them: they will participate in real science.

They will rotate through CorePath Laboratories’ clinical laboratories, exploring cancer genetics, flow cytometry, histopathology, and cytogenetics while working alongside the professionals who practice these disciplines every day. While one group is in the laboratory, another will be engaged in scientific scholarship, developing peer-reviewed articles for publication in INNOVAPATH™. Each team will also carry a mentored capstone project from conception to presentation, culminating in a formal showcase at graduation. But the science is only part of the experience.

Each week is built around themes that extend beyond technical skills: servant leadership, effective communication, critical thinking, professionalism, collaboration, curiosity, and impact. These are the qualities that shape not only successful careers, but meaningful lives.

Our goal is not to produce finished scientists or fully formed leaders in four weeks. Such things take years. Our goal is simpler and, perhaps, more important: to help young people glimpse what they might become, to expose them to possibilities they may not yet see in themselves, and to send them home more confident, more curious, and more committed to growth than when they arrived.

Because education, at its best, is not about arriving. It is about becoming!
