On July 2, we had the privilege of celebrating the graduation of the 2026 LIgHT-HEALS Integrated Summer Internship Program, organized by the HBond Foundation, in San Antonio, Texas. It was more than a graduation ceremony; it was a celebration of curiosity, purpose, and the remarkable potential of the next generation of scientists and healthcare leaders.
Over just four weeks, these exceptional interns demonstrated what can happen when talent is matched with opportunity and mentorship. Working in collaborative teams, they produced eight scientific narrative reviews on some of medicine’s most pressing and emerging topics, including bacteriophage therapy for antimicrobial resistance, artificial intelligence in hematopathology, measurable residual disease in multiple myeloma, microplastics and brain health, chronic sleep deprivation and Alzheimer’s disease, and structural racism as a determinant of cardiovascular outcomes.
Their accomplishments extended well beyond the written word. Each team designed and completed a capstone project and presented its work as a scientific poster. They explored innovation firsthand through visits to Southwest Research Institute and VelocityTX, gaining insight into how scientific discoveries evolve into technologies that improve lives.
Equally important, they invested in the qualities that define exceptional professionals. Through discussions on servant leadership, communication, ethics, critical thinking, debate, and personal reflection, they explored not only how to advance science but also how to lead with integrity, humility, and compassion.
This extraordinary experience would not have been possible without the unwavering commitment of our partners and mentors. I extend my deepest gratitude to our faculty, capstone mentors, staff, the HBond Foundation, and CorePath Laboratories, whose generosity in providing our interns with unlimited access to its state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratories and professional expertise transformed the program into a truly immersive, hands-on learning experience. Few students at this stage of their education have the opportunity to learn within an advanced clinical laboratory environment, and CorePath’s commitment to education made that experience possible.
To our graduates: you have accomplished far more than completing a summer internship. You have demonstrated that meaningful scientific inquiry, thoughtful leadership, and a commitment to service can begin long before professional school. Continue asking difficult questions, pursuing excellence, and using your knowledge to make a difference. The future of medicine and science will be stronger because of you!
