Leadership in Public Service: A Conversation with Former Mayor Ron Nirenberg

The interns of the LIgHT-HEALS Integrated Summer Internship Program 2026 had the privilege of engaging with Ron Nirenberg, who served as Mayor of San Antonio from 2017 to 2025.

Drawing on his experience in public service, Mayor Nirenberg reflected on a career journey that was far from linear, reminding our interns that meaningful careers are often shaped by unexpected opportunities, perseverance, and a willingness to serve others.

During an engaging question-and-answer session, one intern asked how he determined his priorities as Mayor. In response, he spoke about four areas that guided much of his administration’s work: affordable housing, dependable transportation, health care, and equity. His reflections highlighted the importance of focusing on issues that directly affect the quality of life of a community and the responsibility of leaders to balance immediate needs with long-term vision.

The session offered our interns a valuable perspective on leadership, civic engagement, and the impact that thoughtful public service can have on the lives of others. We are grateful to Mayor Nirenberg for investing his time in the next generation of leaders and for sharing lessons learned from a remarkable career in service to the City of San Antonio.
