LIgHT-HEALS Interns Visit Southwest Research Institute

Last week, HBond Foundation’s LIgHT–HEALS Integrated Summer Internship cohort traded the seminar room for the laboratory floor, spending the day at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio, TX.

SwRI is one of the largest independent, nonprofit applied research and development organizations in the country, a place where engineers and scientists work on problems that range from space instrumentation to automotive systems to materials and mechanical testing.

For our interns, walking those halls meant seeing the distance between a textbook diagram and a working apparatus functioning in real time. They watched equipment that measures, stresses, and proves things being explained by the people who actually run it.

That distinction matters. It is one thing to learn that research exists; it is another to stand a few feet from it and ask the engineer a question. The students who did exactly that today are the ones who will remember this visit five years from now.

What we valued most was watching their attention. They listened. They leaned in. They asked. The LIgHT-HEALS framework, Leadership, Innovation, Healthcare, and Technology, is built on the conviction that exposure shapes ambition and that young people rise to the level of the rooms we are willing to put them in.
